Author Bio

Since the release of her debut contemporary romance novel, Off Sides, in January 2013, Sawyer Bennett has released multiple books, many of which have appeared on the New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists.

A reformed trial lawyer from North Carolina, Sawyer uses real life experience to create relatable, sexy stories that appeal to a wide array of readers. From new adult to erotic contemporary romance, Sawyer writes something for just about everyone.

Sawyer likes her Bloody Marys strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active daughter, as well as full-time servant to her adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or even better, both.

Sawyer also writes general and women’s fiction under the pen name S. Bennett and sweet romance under the name Juliette Poe.

The Interview

When did you discover your love of writing?

It’s been within the last few years. I’ve been publishing for five years, and for some time prior to that, I tossed around the idea of trying my hand at writing fiction. Once I sat down and put pen to paper (Fingers to keys? You get the idea…), I realized I really loved it.

What do you like to do in the off chance that you have some down time?

Hang out with my toddler who, if I can brag for a moment, is pretty much the coolest kid ever. I also love my time at the gym, enjoy fishing in the lake behind my house, and of course, reading.

Most Authors have a certain type of erotica, for example the simple romance with hot sex scenes. You, however, delve into sports, law, bdsm, etc. How do you manage to write amazing stories so different, in so many categories? I listened to the entire Cold Fury Series and they are all unique in their own way. Also, the Wicked Horse Series, hot as hell by the way, was brilliant writing.

Thank you! Part of the drive to write so many different types of erotic romance is to keep it fresh. Surprisingly, sex can be tough to write sometimes, because no one wants to read a boring sex scene, or the same sex scene over and over. Fresh is key!

Have you ever finished a book, but, decided not to publish it?

I sat on The Hard Truth About Sunshine for two years before I finished and published it. I had the story idea and part of the story, but it wasn’t the right time. I sat on that idea and partial manuscript until it felt right, then finished and published it. I’m proud of all my books, but I am most proud of The Hard Truth About Sunshine.

Which is more important character development or plot? Why?

I think they are equally important. The reader won’t care about the plot if they can’t connect to a character, and they can love a character, but be completely bored by them if there is no plot to keep them entertained. They definitely go hand-in-hand.

As I said, I listened to all of the Cold Fury Series and The Wicked Horse. I’m a truck driver with my hubby by day, so listening on Audible works great for me. Do you have a hand in who narrates your novels? Cris Dukehart is amazing by the way.

I can’t take credit for any of the Cold Fury audio, since those are handled by Random House, but I take full credit for Wicked Horse. I choose the narrators for the majority of my indie titles, with the exception of The Off Series and Last Call Series, both of which I sold the rights to.

Are there any real life situations that you draw inspiration from?

Every day! I was a lawyer in my previous life, which obviously has influenced a number of my books. And in general, there is so much happening every day that can trigger something in my mind and an idea is born from there.

Who are some of your favorite Authors? And, do you find time to enjoy reading?

In the romance genre, I adore Kristen Ashley. She writes the best alphas. My true love is PNR, so a lot of the reading I do is in that realm. And I do enjoy reading when I’m able, but with a busy schedule and toddler, that doesn’t always happen. I do listen to audiobooks while I’m busy doing other things, so that is where I’ve been enjoying books lately.

Do you have any book signing events planned for 2018?

I have two coming up in 2018 – Naughty San Diego (April 14) and Book Bonanza (July 20-21)

How do you handle writer’s block?

Knock on wood, I don’t suffer from writer’s block. I will sometimes just not be in the mood, in which case I need to walk away and clear my head. I can usually get back into it the next day.

What do you want readers to feel when they’ve finished one of your novels?

I want readers to feel satisfied, because that means the story I’ve written has fulfilled whatever expectations they had. And proud. I want readers to be proud of what they choose to read. I don’t ever want a reader to feel like they need to hide what they are reading because of any stigma connected to the romance genre. I’m proud of the stories I create, and I want readers to be proud of the stories they devour.

Finally what message do you have for your fans?

Thank you! There are endless options available for today’s readers, and I am eternally grateful to those readers that have given my work a chance. Whether you’ve read one, or my entire catalog, I appreciate you.
