The Interview

When did you know you wanted to be an Author and why did you choose the genre you chose?

I’ve always been an avid reader. I started writing around 8 or 10. I actually started in urban fantasy and sweet contemporary romance. I was going through a hard time in my personal life and decided to let loose and write something dark, violent, no holds barred. At the time that I wrote Crime Lord’s Captive, I had no idea that there was such a thing as mafia romance. I was lucky to fall into a genre that welcomed me with open arms!

How long does it typically take you to write a full length novel from start to finish?

This is very tricky. When I was a beginner I could write a 40 – 60k word novel in about 2 weeks. As I grow, I notice it takes me longer because I pay more attention to the story and details. Depending on the book, it can take anywhere from 2 – 6 months.

Who are some of your favorite Authors?

Kristen Ashley, LJ Shen, Linda Howard, Julie Garwood, Stephanie Laurens, JR Ward, Thea Harrison, Suzanne Wright, Katy Evans, Addison Cain, Nalini Singh, Amanda Quick, Jeaniene Frost… and the list goes on.

Island vacation or stay home and enjoy the quiet?

I’m from Hawaii so island life is my regular life. So, I would say stay home and enjoy the quiet.

Wine or Liquor?

Liquor.

If you had the chance to interview another Author, who would it be and what would your “need to know” question be?

It would probably be JK Rowling or Kristen Ashley and it would be about writing process because I’m a nerd and fascinated by creativity and how people’s minds work.

Have you ever started a book and didn’t finish?

YES! I would say over a dozen. I even had the covers made, but alas, no book!

Do you have your plot planned before you develop your characters?

I think I start with character first and weave the plot around them. I guess that makes me a pantser. I actually do sketch out a plot, but it’s just an outline because the characters do whatever they want.

Are any of your storylines based on real life experience?

No, thank God.

Have you ever experienced writer’s block?

Yes. There are times when you’re writing and it’s all shit, so you stop. There’s times when you have too many ideas and then none of them pan out. I also think of this as writer’s block. Then there are the times when you just don’t feel anything at all and your mind is all snowy. This is when you read or watch movies until something clicks.

What is your life quote?

Work hard in silence. Let your success be the noise.

How does your family handle you being a romance/erotica writer?

They don’t know what to do with me and like to pretend that I write magazine articles, which is fine with me.

Do you find it difficult to write sex scenes?

Yes. Much porn is consumed while writing sex scenes. Research, you know…

How do you handle negative reviews?

Honestly, I don’t read them. Even if someone doesn’t like what I wrote, I wouldn’t change it for them so it’s a waste of time and energy. You’re either for me or not and either way, I’ll live.

Finally, what message do you have for your readers?

THANK YOU for your support, enthusiasm, and belief in me. I couldn’t do it without you all!
